This cuatro evolved from the baroque era 10-string Bandurria and Laud from Spain.
5 pairs of steel strings.
It is the most common used today and is used to play jibaro music, salon genres,
salsa, pop, rock, classical, jazz, and even American blue grass and many more styles.
The modern, fiddle-shaped Cuatro of Puerto Rico is a twentieth
century incarnation of a vaguely similar 4-string instrument
that originally descended from the renaissance guitars early Spanish colonists.
With 10 steel strings in 5 courses, the cuatro is strummed or picked with a plectrum.
As a melody instrument, its sound might be imagined as that of a full-voiced, baritone mandolin.
